Provenance: Count Gustav Trolle Bonde Collection (acquired in Paris in 1796); Count Trolle Bonde Collection, Schloss Säfstaholm; sale of the Trolle Bonde Collection (1920); Stockholms Auktionswerk auction, 17 April 1985 (as an autograph work, with a certificate from Alexandre Annanoff, who considers this painting to be the oil version of a drawing, which has been handed down to us only in a reversed engraving by Francois Basan, see A. Annanoff, Francois Boucher, 1976, vol. I, p. 201f.); Stockholms Auktionswerk auction, 24-26 November 1999, lot 418A

Literaturee: E. and J. de Goncourt, L’Art du DixHuitième Siècle, Paris 1880, p. 189, no. 78; A. Annanoff, Francois Boucher, Paris, 1976, vol. I, p. 201f., no. 68 (‘disparu’). Alexandre Annanoff planned to include this painting in the supplement to his catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Boucher which unfortunately never appeared. It belonged to one of the most important Swedish collections of the late 18th century. Count Trolle Bonde acquired more than 200 paintings, including two works by Titian, which even today are considered to be authentic. In 1920 the collection which had fallen into oblivion was dispersed by his descendants by auction.

Certificate: A. Annanoff (as an early autograph work by Boucher dating from around 1731).
